From Ajay Bisht to Yogi Adityanath
Born on 5 June 1972 in Panchur village of Pauri Garhwal, Uttarakhand, as Ajay Singh Bisht. He completed his early schooling in the hills before enrolling at Hemvati Nandan Bahuguna Garhwal University, where he earned his B.Sc. in mathematics.
His student years were shaped by active involvement in nationalist movements, including the Ram Janmabhoomi andolan. In 1993, drawn by the lineage of the Nath Sampradaya, he met Mahant Avaidyanath ji at Gorakhnath Math. The following year, at the age of 22, he renounced worldly life and was initiated as Yogi Adityanath.
He took charge of the Math's social and educational institutions early — guiding hospitals, schools, the Maharana Pratap Shiksha Parishad and welfare programmes that serve eastern Uttar Pradesh to this day.
